The charismatic, anarchic alter ego of the unnamed Narrator in Chuck Palahniuk's 'Fight Club' and its film adaptation. He is the personification of a primal, anti-consumerist, and anti-establishment ideology, known for founding the underground 'Fight Club' and the terrorist organization 'Project Mayhem'.
Tyler Durden is a quintessential, albeit extreme, ENTP. His dominant Extraverted Intuition (Ne) is on constant display, generating a torrent of radical ideas, philosophical rants, and chaotic possibilities aimed at deconstructing the modern world. He sees connections others miss—linking soap, consumer debt, and human emasculation—and uses these insights to provoke and inspire. His reckless behaviors—making soap from stolen liposuction fat, engaging in dangerous fights, and orchestrating elaborate pranks against corporate symbols—exemplify his rejection of Si (safety, rules) and his 8w7 lust for intensity. The core plot twist that he is a dissociated aspect of the Narrator is itself a metaphor for the ENTP’s shadow: an unchecked, destructive expression of Ne and Ti that the more conscious self (an ISTJ) cannot integrate.
